The Origins
Montecucco’s history is rooted in an ancient, layered and deeply distinctive territory dominated by Mount Amiata, an extinct volcano that has shaped the climate, landscape and culture of the area for millennia.
Located between northern and southern Etruria, this territory has been inhabited since Etruscan times, as evidenced by archaeological findings and traces of early agricultural and winemaking practices. The Etruscans were among the first to develop a structured wine culture, whose principles are now being rediscovered and reinterpreted.
With the arrival of the Romans, the area became an important spa destination thanks to the sulphurous waters of Mount Amiata, while during the Middle Ages it gained strategic importance along the Via Francigena, a key route between Rome and northern Europe. The construction of the Abbey of San Salvatore and numerous castles and fortifications testifies to the political, religious and commercial significance of this area.
After a long period under Sienese and Medici rule, the 19th century was marked by mining activity, which shaped the territory for over a century. With the end of this phase, Montecucco reinvented itself, returning to its agricultural vocation and developing a high-quality production system alongside a model of widespread and sustainable hospitality.
Within this context, viticulture has always played a central role, evolving to the official recognition of Montecucco DOC in 1998 and Montecucco Sangiovese DOCG in 2011, confirming the high quality achieved by the territory.
The Consortium
The Montecucco Wine Consortium was founded in 2000
by a group of producers united by the desire to build a shared path of growth, protection and promotion of the denomination.
Today it represents 68 wineries and coordinates a production chain covering approximately 800 hectares of vineyards, with an annual output exceeding one million bottles and further growth potential.
The Consortium plays a central role in supervision, promotion and enhancement of the Montecucco brand, ensuring full traceability throughout the entire production chain, from vineyard to bottle. Alongside these activities, it promotes agronomic and oenological research projects in collaboration with national and international institutions.
Over time, the Consortium has gained the trust of local producers and attracted some of the most important names in the Italian wine sector, building a diverse yet cohesive community united by shared values of quality, authenticity and respect for the land.
